Innovative Mooring and Anchoring Systems for Floating Substations

The rapid advancement of floating offshore wind (FOW) technology hinges directly on the viability of floating substations (FSS), which must remain stable across vast sea surfaces and water depths exceeding 200m. Traditional catenary mooring, where heavy chains rely on seabed friction and weight, becomes prohibitively expensive, large, and inefficient in these environments. The industry has therefore pivoted to innovative solutions that maximize station-keeping while minimizing the seabed footprint and installation cost.

The primary innovation lies in the shift toward taut-line and semi-taut mooring systems. These configurations replace or heavily supplement steel chain with synthetic fiber ropes (like polyester), which are significantly lighter and possess higher strength-to-weight ratios. The buoyancy and elasticity of these synthetic lines allow the mooring system to be tensioned, providing a superior restoring force that restricts the FSS's horizontal and vertical motions more effectively than slack catenary lines. This tighter control is essential for managing the dynamic umbilical cables connected to the turbines and the large export cable running to shore.

Concurrently, anchoring technology has evolved to match this performance. Suction caisson anchors have become the industry standard. These hollow steel cylinders are installed by actively pumping water out, using hydrostatic pressure to embed them deeply into the seabed, offering high holding capacity with rapid, reversible installation. For less demanding substrates, lightweight vertical load anchors (VLAs), which function like underwater kites, offer a cost-effective alternative by rotating into the soil to resist vertical forces.

These integrated, high-performance mooring and anchoring systems are key enablers for FOW, transforming a deep-sea engineering challenge into a commercially scalable solution that ensures the long-term structural integrity and power stability of the grid connection.
